Summary:

Mikono Safi, which means clean hands in Kiswahili, is a cluster randomised control trial aking place among school-aged children in the Kagera Region, North-West Tanzania. The aim of the study is to assess the effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention that promotes hand washing with soap, in reducing both the prevalence and infection intensity of Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). Outcome mapping was used for the research into use/research uptake component of the project.

Why was OM chosen?

Outcome mapping was chosen to plan, measure and deliver research into use activities to ensure maximum engagement with key stakeholders - and increase the likelihood that research findings would be taken up.

What was the experience of using OM?

Through using OM to undertake stakeholder mapping and ensure early engagement with key stakeholders, MITU were able to build a strong relationship with officials from the district education team. District education officials developed strong support for the project, enabling MITU to access schools and to build relationships directly with headteachers and teachers. MITU were also able to engage educational officials and teachers at the Regional and District level to review proposed curriculum content on handwashing with soap. This curriculum content has since been used in MITU’s formative study and main trial which covers eight intervention schools in Kagera - with potential for future scale up within the district if the intervention proves successful.
